This annual award is presented to a member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) to acknowledge the exemplary work of nurses in the area of neuro-oncology nursing. The purpose of the award is to promote the dissemination of information related to the nursing care of children and adults with brain tumours and their families. Abstracts may reflect clinical practice, education or research related to the neuro-oncology population.
Congratulations to Catriona Leckie, Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Neuro-Oncology at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary for winning the 2010 Award for Excellence in Neuro-Oncology Nursing. Catriona received her award at the 2010 CANO Conference in Edmonton, Alberta for her two papers presented at the conference: “Neurological examination: Putting it into oncology practice” and “A Nurse Led Session: An Innovative educational approach for patients with high grade gliomas”.
The award was presented prior to the closing ceremonies at the annual conference. In the event of multiple authors, the honorarium is be divided appropriately.
Award Amount: $1,500.00 (along with a framed recognition certificate)
2009 CANO Award
Due to a lack of applications, the 2009 CANO Award was not awarded.
2008 CANO Award
Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is proud to announce that for 2008 Barb Willson, RN, MS, CON(C), Anne Bradwell, RN, Sandra Chapman, RN and Leela Kesavan, RN were selected for their abstract on Perfexion Gamma Knife Radiation Treatment: When the Extraordinary becomes Ordinary. A resource booklet has been created for nurses caring for patients receiving Stereotactic Radiosurgery using the PERFEXION™ Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital/University Health Network in Toronto, Ontario.

The 2008 Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology Conference (20th Annual CANO Conference) was held September 14 through 17, 2008 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Janic Gorayeb, Health Information Specialist, attended on behalf of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and to present the award to this year’s recipients.
2007 CANO Award
The 2007 award was presented to Rosemary Cashman from the BC Cancer Agency for her presentation, “Measurement of Functional Impairments and Adaptational Efforts in Persons with Malignant Gliomas: A Prospective Mixed Methods Study” at the annual CANO conference in Vancouver on October 31, 2007.
Congratulations Rosemary, and thank you for your continued dedication to those affected by brain tumours.

2006 CANO Award
The 2006 winner was Lorraine Topf, from Kelowna, BC, for her poster presentation: An Evidence Based Approach to the Development of a Brain Tumour Support Group. Congratulations Lorraine!
