Award for Excellence in Neuro-Oncology Nursing

This annual award is presented to a member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) to acknowledge the exemplary work of nurses in the area of neuro-oncology nursing. The purpose of the award is to promote the dissemination of information related to the nursing care of children and adults with brain tumours and their families. Abstracts may reflect clinical practice, education or research related to the neuro-oncology population.

Award Amount: $1,500.00 (along with a framed recognition certificate)

Neuro-Oncology Nurses Awarded
for Excellence in 2008

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is proud to announce that for 2008 Barb Willson, RN, MS, CON(C), Anne Bradwell, RN, Sandra Chapman, RN and Leela Kesavan, RN were selected for their abstract on Perfexion Gamma Knife Radiation Treatment: When the Extraordinary becomes Ordinary. A resource booklet has been created for nurses caring for patients receiving Stereotactic Radiosurgery using the PERFEXION™ Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital/University Health Network in Toronto, Ontario.

Congratulations and thank you so much to all the dedicated nurses who do so much in the fight against the devastating disease of brain tumours.

The 2008 Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology Conference (20th Annual CANO Conference) was held September 14 through 17, 2008 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Janic Gorayeb, Health Information Specialist, attended on behalf of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and to present the award to this year’s recipients.

The 2007 award was presented to Rosemary Cashman from the BC Cancer Agency for her presentation, “Measurement of Functional Impairments and Adaptational Efforts in Persons with Malignant Gliomas: A Prospective Mixed Methods Study” at the annual CANO conference in Vancouver on October 31, 2007.

 

Congratulations Rosemary, and thank you for your continued dedication to those affected by brain tumours.

 

2006 Winner:
This year's winner was Lorraine Topf, from Kelowna, BC, for her poster presentation: An Evidence Based Approach to the Development of a Brain Tumour Support Group.  Congratulations Lorraine!

Description:
This award will be presented to a CANO member who presents the best paper or poster in the area of neuro-oncology nursing at the annual CANO conference. The presentation may reflect clinical practice, education or research related to the neuro-oncology population.

The award consists of an honorarium to be used to support the recipient’s continuing education and a framed recognition certificate.

The recipient of the award will submit a letter to the Chair of the Recognition of Excellence Committee and the Executive Director of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, specifically outlining how the awarded funds will be used for continuing education. This should be submitted within 6 weeks of receiving the award.

Criteria:

-CANO member (for a minimum of two consecutive years)
-Submitted abstract cannot be sponsored by a commercial organization, nor can it promote a commercial product or advertise a specific program
-Preference will be given to presenters with CON(C) designation
-Focus in clinical practice, research or education

Application:
Authors submitting abstracts should indicate if their presentation relates to neuro-oncology by marking the appropriate box on the abstract submission form.

All abstracts related to aspects of neuro-oncology nursing, submitted by a CANO member, will be eligible for this award.

Members of the Recognition of Excellence Committee in attendance at the annual conference (or other CANO committee members as selected by the Chair) will review each eligible applicant’s presentation (paper or poster) and select the recipient of the award. A member of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada will be invited to participate in the review process.

The award will be presented prior to the closing ceremonies at the annual conference. In the event of multiple authors, the honorarium will be divided appropriately.
