Children at East Hills Translate “A Friend in Hope”

On Friday, October 26th, the Level 4, 5 and 6 students at East Hill School in Rivière-des-Prairies, Montréal, PQ held a celebration of their work in translating our storybook, “A Friend in Hope” into Italian. At a celebration in the school gymnasium, 200 students and 50 guests witnessed the unveiling of a copy of the cover of “La mia amica Speranza”.

Rocco Speranza became inspired to have East Hill School work with our children’s storybook after hearing of another class project. His friend, Pia Dibacco, a teacher at another school in Montréal, worked to integrate information about brain tumours and “A Friend in Hope” into their studies of the brain. The program was a success so Pia and the students at her school helped to raise the funds to translate the storybook into a French edition, “Mon Amie Claire”. Since East Hill Elementary teaches in English, French and Italian languages, the Italian Department Head, Giovanna Giordano, led the students in activities to promote Brain Tumour Awareness Month in October and “La mia amica Speranza”.

The special day showcased children’s get well cards for patients, a skit based on the storybook, and a special song by a Montréal songwriter called, “Imagine a Cure”. Dr. Rolando Del Maestro, Pam Del Maestro – founders of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, friends from the English Montréal School Board and the Italian Consulate, Professor Giovanni Pillonca from Instituto di Cultura Italiano – who helped with the final translation, Tony Tomassi – the Member of the Quebec National Assembly for LaFontaine, and Susan Relecom from Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada all attended the celebration.

It is through great creativity and the vision of people like Rocco Speranza, Pia Di Bacco, and the class at East Hill School that so much is being done to help children and create awareness for the need to find a cure for brain tumours. Thank you so much.
