Volunteers are the life-blood of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. From the volunteer leadership our board provides to the support group facilitators and convenors, the Spring Sprint coordinators, special volunteers who help with training and education, and support us in the office, we would not be able to provide the kinds of services that you expect from Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

In October 2007, we honoured two very special volunteers who have given exceptional gifts of their time and expertise.

Phyllis Retty

Phyllis started volunteering for our organization more than 10 years ago, in 1997, when she came out to help with the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball fundraising event. She was soon afterwards invited to join the Board of Directors and her passion to make a difference brought her into the role of Chair of the Board in 2001. Phyllis served in this leadership role for six terms during which the organization went through significant transition and change.

Since 2004, she has joined other professionals as the Chair of the Research Committee.

In her own words, she focuses on the importance of compassion, commitments and courage: “It’s all about the patients and their families.”

Cheryl Clarke

Cheryl has worn many hats for Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada as the coordinator of the Belleville Spring Sprint and a co-facilitator of the Belleville Brain Tumour Support Group. She is a passionate leader who many refer to as a loving and caring person. On top of these two very important roles, Cheryl has also shared her family’s story of her husband’s battle with a brain tumour in the media to provide hope and support to others who have been affected by this devastating disease.

Through her leadership at Belleville Spring Sprint, an event that raised $21,000 in 2007, Cheryl has created a culture that provides support and raises awareness. Some have even referred to the Spring Sprint as being reminiscent of a family reunion. She first started attending the Belleville Support Group on behalf of her husband in 1998 as a regular member. However, when the need for a facilitator arose, Cheryl stepped up to the plate. Since that time, she has offered support to countless people, relying on her own experiences and her caring heart to extend her help to the lives of people in the Belleville area.

Cheryl lives the vision that a cure will be found for brain tumours and that, until then, to help improve the quality of life by those who are affected by a brain tumour.
