New Northey Family Resource Library Honours Co-Founders’ Vision
As a parent directly affected by a brain tumour, Steve Northey knows first-hand how important it is to find reliable information. The new Northey Family Resource Library has recently been established to honour the Northey family’s dedication to the cause and make it easier for families to find the information they desperately need.
Like many of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s key supporters, Steve has been personally affected by the cause. In July 1981, Steve and Carolyn’s world changed dramatically when their daughter, Kelly, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.
Just 8 years old, Steve remembers Kelly as a remarkable little girl. "Kelly never really complained about pain or why she had to deal with this terrible disease," Steve says. "She seemed to accept it as part of her life. She appreciated the love and support the she received from her family and friends."
Despite incredible support from the medical community, Steve had a difficult time getting reliable and accurate information on brain tumours. He decided that something needed to be done.
When Kelly died on January 30, 1982, Steve began creating a legacy in her memory. He visited Dr. Rolando Del Maestro, one of Canada’s premier neurosurgeons, and Pam Del Maestro, a neuroscience nurse, to talk about the need for more research and information. "Steve was determined to help patients in a Canadian way," says Dr. Del Maestro, recalling Steve’s "go-getter" attitude. From this conversation, the three founded the Brain Research Fund Foundation of London, now the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
Steve is proud of the organization he helped to create. "Patient Resource Handbooks, Information Days and Support Groups have benefited many patients and their families who are looking for answers just as we were back in 1981," he says. "The difference now, thanks to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, is that more of those questions can be answered."
In addition to being Co-founders, the Northey Family has established a legacy Fund in Kelly’s name supporting pediatric research to find a cure for this devastating disease.
Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is funded solely through contributions from individuals, corporations, organizations, employee groups and special events.
