Reacting to a Diagnosis
Getting a Second Opinion
Many patients often inquire about getting a second opinion in regards to their treatment plan. It is important to know that you are absolutely entitled to a second opinion if you wish. As this is your illness and your health, you will be required to make some very important long-term and short-term decisions about your medical treatment. You will want to feel comfortable with these decisions.
Many people worry about offending their doctor if they request a second opinion. Doctors understand and recognize that their patients need to be comfortable with their decisions and will arrange for a referral to another physician for a second opinion. The primary importance is the needs of the patient and not whether the physician feels offended. An open discussion with your doctor can usually help to clarify these issues. It is important to note that if you prefer to have a second opinion that you verbalize this concern. Your doctor will not assume that this is your wish if you choose not to ask for it.
It is important however to keep in mind that a second opinion may not always be necessary or may not provide clarification for you. Patients may find themselves in a more confused state, if the second opinion varies significantly from the first. Then the question arises about which plan of treatment to follow. Ensure that you understand each treatment plan and have your doctor explain the potential outcomes and risks of each treatment. You will need to be an active participant in your care and the decision for which treatment plan to follow.
A helpful hint for patients who are seeking a second opinion is to always bring a responsible family member or friend to any appointments, whether it is for a first, second, or even third opinion. An extra set of ears can often help to clarify what was said and discussed in the appointments. It is normal to not pick up everything the doctor says when you are dealing with the stress of this diagnosis.
