Reacting to a Diagnosis

Building a Strong Support System

A brain tumour diagnosis is a terrifying experience for anyone. A strong support system will allow you to better cope with challenges that you may face. Support systems can have a significant impact on both your physical and mental strength while undergoing the initial shock of your diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately throughout your recovery period.

A support system can contain many different individuals and they can provide support to you in various ways. Family and friends can often provide you with both the emotional support you will need as well as help you with any day-to-day personal care. Your health care team with provide you with the medical treatment and support that you require according to your treatment plan. They can also provide you with knowledge and understanding of your diagnosis, giving you the support you require in the way of information.

There are other individuals or groups that can be supportive of you during this time. Community organizations, brain tumour-related support groups, other cancer support groups, online/Internet support, and your healthcare centre’s Social Work department can all help in a multitude of ways.

Patients will often find new meaning in their lives after a brain tumour diagnosis and may find an interest to explore their religion further. Life may often be taken less for granted after surviving a brain tumour. It can be comforting to find support with other individuals of the same faith and understanding.

The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada can also be a valuable resource for emotional support. Support groups have been set up in many centres across the country and can link you to other patients and family members that have shared similar experiences. Contact the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada to find a support group near you or check out the online Message Board and Chat Room to connect with other patients and family members.
