'A Friend in Hope'

A story about Hope’s journey with a brain tumour

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is proud to offer our Children’s Book, 'A Friend in Hope', a story about Hope’s journey with a brain tumour. 'A Friend in Hope' has been created to provide support and information to young children who have been affected by a brain tumour diagnosis, either personally or through someone close to them, and to create public awareness about brain tumours. Through imagination and hope, this touching story about Danny and his best friend Hope who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, will bring a better level of understanding of a brain tumour diagnosis to our young readers.

A Friend in Hope, Mon amie Claire and La mia amica Speranza are the only books of their kind in Canada. These children storybooks are free of charge to families and are distributed to children hospitals, neuro clinics, cancer support groups, libraries and schools across Canada. The English and French versions have been made possible by generous donations from Ronald McDonald House Charities, RBC Foundation and the Di Bacco and Falconi families and friends. The edition available in Italian was created in 2008 thanks to East Hill Elementary School and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Montreal.

Just like their parents, children have questions and the more they know and understand, the better they are able to cope with their diagnosis. In 2004 a committee of educators, parents and volunteers worked together to create an English storybook for children living with a brain tumour. In this storybook, parents and children follow Hope’s journey to wellness through the eyes of her friend Danny and addresses medical procedures, symptoms such as hair loss, hospital stays and missing school and friends. Written by Marisa Zammit; illustrated by Erica Dornbusch the book was later translated into French by Carole Baillargeon and then into Italian by the students of East Hill Elementary School and Italian teachers Giovanna Giordano, Eduardo Roda and Antonella Andrecciola.

Over 10,400 storybooks have been utilized by children, family members, friends and health care professionals in the last four years. Please contact Janic Gorayeb, Health Information Specialist for free copy of either the English, French or Italian storybook at jgorayeb@braintumour.ca or at 1-800-265-5106 x233.

The Development of 'A Friend in Hope'

The concept of this book was developed by the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s Education Committee (Carol Van Evera, Lesley-Ann Senior, and Natalie Berkiw) and was brought to life by the extraordinary talents of the author, Marisa Zammit, and the illustrator, Erica Dornbusch.

Thanks to Vivid Design for donating their time and skills to the graphic design of this book, and to Autumn Graphics for providing the scans of the illustrations.

A special thank you to Ronald McDonald House Charities as we could not have printed and distributed this wonderful book without their generous donation and support.

We have fondly dedicated this children’s book to the memory of Peter Dowling, who brought his many talents to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and to the Education Committee. We are so thankful to have known him.
