Research Fellowship Application FAQs

To help you complete the application process for the Brain Tumour Research Fellowships, below are the answers to frequently asked questions about this program. Thank you for your interest and good luck!

ELIGIBILITY

I will be completing my PhD and defending after January 2018. Can I still apply?

No, unfortunately you would not be eligible for the 2018-2020 Brain Tumour Research Fellowship program. Please consider applying next year when your PhD is complete.

I completed my training outside of Canada. Am I still eligible?

Yes. As long as you meet the other eligibility requirements, you may qualify for this award. The research must be conducted in Canada, and you must have identified a supervisor for your project prior to submitting.


SUBMITTING MY APPLICATION

When do the applications need to be submitted by?

The deadline to apply is Friday, January 26, 2018. All copies, an electronic copy and all hard copies must be RECEIVED by 4:00 pm EST on Friday January 26, 2018.  

How do I submit my application?

An electronic version (PDF) of the complete application must be submitted by email to sruypers@braintumour.ca. Additionally, the original, plus ten hard copies, must be submitted. The hard copies can be sent by mail, courier, or dropped off in person. All copies must be received by 4:00 pm EST on Friday January 26, 2018. 

Who can submit the application?

The application should be submitted by the applicant.

Can I submit my application in French?

Yes. While the application form is only available in English, it is possible to submit your application in French. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact rferro@braintumour.ca

REFERENCES

Who can act as acceptable references?

Ideally a reference will be someone who can speak to your experience in a research lab setting, or in another academic setting. A professor, instructor, or lab supervisor are all acceptable choices.

Can my proposed supervisor act as one of my references?

No, your supervisor cannot act as one of your references. 

How do I submit my reference letters?

Reference letters can be emailed or mailed to us directly. Please advise us if reference letters are coming separately, and who they will be from.

If references are submitted with your application, please include them in separate, signed envelopes and within your PDF.

All reference letters must be received by January 26, 2018 at 4:00 pm EST in order to be accepted.

APPLICATION CONTENT

Do I have to have an idea of a project?

Yes, your application must include a project proposal. The project can be something entirely new that the student will be working on, or can be part of an existing project that the supervisor is working on.

Do I have to find my own supervisor?

Yes, your application must be submitted including the information identifying your proposed supervisor and the project proposal. We are unable to provide assistance in determining a supervisor.

My project is on brain metastases—does that count?

Yes, the requirement is for the project to study brain tumours. All projects that study brain tumours, whether primary or secondary, malignant or non-malignant, will be considered for funding.
