Welcoming exceptional new volunteers

  December 2, 2025

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Whether they’re welcoming families at a Brain Tumour Walk, supporting survivors and caregivers in a support group, or helping children connect at a BrainWAVE event, their dedication strengthens our entire community.

We’re excited to introduce seven exceptional new volunteers who are bringing fresh energy, expertise, and compassion to our programs and events. Each of them carries a unique story and a shared commitment to making a difference for people affected by a brain tumour.

Corrina Swiddle

Joining the Fund Development/Walk Committee in Winnipeg, Corrina first began volunteering to support a friend who had lost a loved one to this disease. Her commitment runs even deeper as she is also a proud brain tumour survivor.

After participating in the Winnipeg Walk, she stepped up as an event day volunteer, and she didn’t stop there. Corrina continued her incredible momentum by representing BTFC at the Winnipeg Volunteer Fair, inspiring others to get involved. Welcome, Corrina!

Smruti Sharma

Joining the Program and Services Virtual Caregiver Support Group as a Virtual Convenor, Smruti is in her fourth year at the University of Guelph, majoring in neuroscience. Her passion for understanding the brain comes from seeing firsthand how neurological conditions affect not only patients but also their families. This experience fuels the compassion and energy she brings to every role.

As a Student Senator and Student Ambassador, she has strengthened her communication, collaboration and event-planning skills, and she has also contributed to innovative research as part of the iGEM team. We’re thrilled to welcome her enthusiasm and expertise!

Andrea Monsalve

Joining the Program and Services BrainWave Committee in Calgary, Andrea brings a strong passion for building connections with community organizations.

She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary and has extensive experience providing academic support through not-for-profit tutoring and mentoring programs, as well as volunteering in health-related settings.

We’re delighted to have her on board and look forward to the incredible contributions she’ll bring to our mission.

Oalekan Bisiriyu

Joining the Fund Development/Walk Committee in Winnipeg, Ola brings both heart and enthusiasm to our community. He recently shared a heartfelt story about his aunt with one of our team members, a moment that highlighted the importance of supportive spaces like ours.

Ola has been actively seeking meaningful ways to give back, and this role aligns perfectly with his values and desire to make a difference. He also brings professional experience as a Technical Account Executive with more than five years in SaaS, B2B sales and digital media. We’re thrilled to welcome Ola to the walk committee family!

Aalia Gulzar

Joining the Program and Services Support Group Program in London, Aalia brings a strong foundation in clinical psychology and extensive experience facilitating group and community sessions.

Her volunteer work with community health and awareness initiatives, including partnerships with UNICEF, reflects her deep commitment to promoting wellness and education for families.

She excels in team collaboration, leading engaging group sessions and connecting individuals with essential social and health resources. We’re thrilled to welcome Aalia and look forward to the positive impact she will make!

Amani Kanjo

Joining the Program and Services BrainWave Committee in Montreal, Amani brings a Master’s in medical biology and genetics, along with extensive experience supporting children, youth and families in complex situations.

Her heartfelt commitment to families affected by pediatric brain tumours will be a meaningful and powerful addition to our team.

We’re delighted to welcome her to the team!

Brenda Wassick

Joining the Program and Services Virtual Caregivers Support Group Program, Brenda brings invaluable lived experience after supporting her husband through his brain tumour diagnosis in early 2023.

Her compassionate approach and thoughtful strategies for navigating caregiving and personal loss will help others feel understood, supported and less alone. We’re honoured to welcome her to our volunteer family!
