How have brain tumours impacted you?
Brain tumours have significantly impacted my life in various ways. My journey began with a diagnosis of a grade two astrocytoma in November 2019. The diagnosis was both destabilizing and validating; it confirmed my concerns about my health after experiencing symptoms for two years, including seizures that were initially dismissed by my doctor.
Navigating my cancer journey during the COVID-19 pandemic added complexity. I underwent surgery in March 2020, just days before lockdowns began, which meant I spent my recovery in a confined space, grappling with both physical healing and the uncertainty of the world. This period forced me to reevaluate my perspective on life and what truly matters. It became a time of reflection and motivation, as I found strength in my work and the impact I could have through my company, Three Ships.
The experience instilled in me a deep sense of resilience. I learned to advocate for myself and trust my instincts about my health, which ultimately led to my diagnosis. Living with the knowledge that my tumour could transform at any time is emotionally taxing, and each scan brings a mix of hope and anxiety.
Moreover, my experience has shaped my approach to entrepreneurship. I now view challenges through a different lens, understanding that many obstacles are not as daunting as they may seem in the grand scheme of life. I appreciate the small moments and relationships I have, knowing how quickly things can change.
How did you become involved with Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada?
I became involved with Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada after my diagnosis. During my journey, I received a patient handbook from BTFC at Princess Margaret Hospital, which provided me with essential information and comfort during a very confusing time.
I realized how important it is to have trusted resources and support when facing a brain tumour diagnosis. This inspired me to give back and help others who are going through similar experiences.
How and when have you participated in past Brain Tumour Walks? How will you be participating this year?
This year, in 2025, will be my first Brain Tumour Walk. I’m going to be walking with family, friends and co-workers. I’m also proud to say that my company, Three Ships, is sponsoring this year’s Brain Tumour Walk in Toronto and Edmonton!
Why would you encourage others to participate in the Brain Tumour Walk?
I would encourage others to participate in the Brain Tumour Walk because it’s a powerful way to raise awareness and support for those affected by brain tumours. This event brings together a community of individuals who understand the challenges and uncertainties that come with a diagnosis. By walking together, we not only honour those who have faced these battles but also help fund vital research and support services that can make a real difference in patients’ lives.
