Impact of receiving this award:
I am very grateful to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada for choosing me to receive this education award, as well as to Deys Fabricating for their generous donation.
My journey with a brain tumour began on the day I was born, though it took doctors 3.5 years to figure out what was wrong with me. Due to my delayed diagnosis I have been left with a permanent physical disability. I always thought I’d be very limited in my career options because of my disability. I applied to some university level Business programs thinking a desk job would be doable for me, but after spending 4 months this past year working for a general contractor I discovered that despite my disability I am able to do a lot more than I ever dreamed I could. I fell in love with the idea of working with my hands and now dream of one day going into business for myself. I chose to become a plumber because it will allow me to fulfil my new career goals. I am determined not to let my disability define who I am or what I can achieve.
This education award from the Brain Tumour Foundation will help cover the cost of my first year of College, alleviating the financial burden for both me and my parents. Given the stress my family and I have endured over the past 19 years due to my brain tumour, receiving this award is an incredible honour and a great relief.
